Secretly, Rowanpaw was relieved to be by herself today. She didn't really have any friends in the camp right now, since her siblings had been pulling away, and she was glad of the chance to drown her worries in the pursuit of rabbits. There was no reason here that she should have to worry about how she would seem, as long as she came back with prey.
Cedarpaw had heard there was some valuable herb--whose name he had regrettably forgotten--growing close to Outlook Rock, and he had gone to check. Sniffing around in the dirt at its base, he noticed a distinctive scent that he hadn't smelled in a while. That's it! The apprentice medicine cat began to gather up the herb, hoping to show his mentor.
No force known to any cat in the Clans could keep Maplepaw in camp when she was determined to leave it, and today she was determined. It felt small and cramped in there, and the ginger apprentice sometimes just couldn't handle that. Now, running across the moor towards the Outlook Rock, she could feel her legs stretching out properly. The scent of a rabbit was on the wind; on a whim, Maplepaw turned to chase after it. If she could bring back a bit of prey, perhaps she would be allowed to bring it to her kit friends in the nursery.
Rowanpaw had already captured two rabbits. Approaching Outlook Rock, she scented another and raced off to see if she could catch it. Hunting--Rowanpaw would take hunting over thinking, some days, and this was one of them.
Cedarpaw had a fairly nice pile of his herbs when he heard pawsteps off in the distance. He dropped the latest of his gathered leaves and stepped a little ways away to scent for whose steps he was hearing. A flash of white fur caught his attention, and he saw a rabbit coming his way, pursued by a familiar shape that carried the scent of his sister--but, oddly, he could not tell which sister.
Maplepaw was coming closer to her prey, but a distant awareness suggested to her that she was not the only cat out here today. A calico pelt crossed her line of vision, close enough that she could identify it as Rowanpaw. The other apprentice was coming closer awfully fast...
Rowanpaw caught the scent of her siblings abruptly. What are they doing here? she wondered, but pushed herself to go faster in order to blot out that thought. There was only the chase and the burn in her legs and--StarClan!
It was obvious now to Cedarpaw that his sisters were in hot pursuit of a rabbit. Specifically, the same rabbit. And they were coming right towards him. Taking the rare opportunity to use the warrior-apprentice skills he had barely had time to learn before drifting into the medicine den, he waited for the right moment. Closer... closer... there! As the rabbit came within his reach, fleeing from the two she-cats after it, he pounced and put the thing out of its misery.
Only a heartbeat later, Rowanpaw and Maplepaw--who had been going too fast to stop themselves so quickly--crashed into their brother and each other. A few frantic, yowling, claw-filled seconds later, the three siblings found themselves in an earthy, slightly-scratched, very winded pile on top of the rabbit.
