But not in the cocky preening way some tend to display their overconfidence. Rather, Sedgewhisker has an almost dark, calculating side to his egotistical nature. He believes himself to be, quite simply, a gift from Starclan. He believes he was meant to lead, meant to do great things. He sees himself as blessed with wisdom, with a calculating analytical nature, and with a slight tinge of ruthlessness to pull it all together. He’s incredibly prideful and will react aggressively when he feels his pride has been breached. He covets authority and revels in the influence he has from simply being a senior warrior. Bitter Sedgewhisker once held high dreams of being named deputy, and eventually gaining leadership of Thunderclan. As mentioned above, he believed it was his destiny to rule the clan. But early in his fifty-third moon, he began having vision problems. While he is not blind, it is substantially weakened. It is quite blurred, to the point that he sometimes doesn’t recognize what he is looking at. This growing blindness has robbed him of the chance of ever becoming deputy. He thus feels his future has been robbed of him, and seeks to assert his authority in any manner possible. Grumpy Sedgewhisker brings to mind that character with a heart of gold, except he doesn’t have a heart of gold – just a hard outer shell. But he isn’t mean or cruel. He’s simply blunt. And he behaves the same with everyone. He tends to get irritated easily and has a slight sarcastic edge, as if everyone else is stupid except for him. And considering his age, he is quite wise and unusually strategic. Despite his unpleasant demeanor and haughty nature, he is valued for his advice and analytical mind.[/classy] [classy=infotop]history[/classy][classy=infobottom]Sedgewhisker was born Sedgekit, first son of Yewthroat and Heavystep. Yewthroat and Heavystep were a classic Thunderclan pair. They had trained together as apprentices, teased each other mercilessly, competed in everything they had done. But eventually, as so many friendships do, it had blossomed into something different. Originally, however, the young couple had agreed that neither particularly wanted kittens. Yewthroat was an ambitious young she-cat, with dreams of becoming deputy. And she knew birthing kittens, especially a pregnancy at an unfortunate time, could rob her of her chances. Heavystep hadn't had his heart set on kittens, and so agreed readily enough. He figured his mate would realize the futility of her attempts, or perhaps her motherly instincts would suddenly kick in with a vengeance. But they didn't. Yewthroat kept on striving. Any moment not with Heavystep was spent joining every extra patrol available. Shortly after her thirtieth moon, much to her surprise, Yewthroat found her stomach growing round. She ignored it steadily, despite her misgivings. Eventually she snuck in to see the Medicine Cat, fearing the worst. Her pregnancy was confirmed. Upon hearing the news, Yewthroat becamde distraught. She begged for a way - anything - to make her lose the kittens. She wasn't ready for motherhood, had never wanted motherhood thrust upon her. The Medicine Cat informed her, with no little disgust, that she was far too along in the pregnancy to lose the kittens. Yewthroat stalked from the den, a part of her already blaming the life inside of her. Eventually Heavystep was informed, and reacted with great joy. Time passed and two tom kittens were born - both patched, one ginger and one white. They were dubbed Sedgekit and Owlkit. Shortly after their birth, Yewthroat visited the Medicine Cat Den again, this time in search of something that would prevent pregnancy. She was reluctantly given the herbs, herbs which would sterilize her. When Heavystep discovered what she had done, without even speaking to him, he was furious. Tensions erupted into a massive fight. In the end, Yewthroat and Heavystep split, Yewthroat gave up all claim to her kittens. Another queen was found to nurse tiny mewling Sedgekit and Owlkit. Their father became their sole parent. He visited every day, and never spoke to them of their mother. Sedgekit and Owlkit grew up happy enough. They grew into strong apprentices - Sedgepaw and Owlpaw. The brothers were close, almost as close as they were with their father. They never really questioned the identity of their mother. A part of them assumed she had died. And they were happy enough without her. For her part, Yewthroat never gave them a second glance. And she never won herself the deputyship of Thunderclan either. It had all been for naught. After six moons of training, Sedgekit and Owlkit were made warriors. They were dubbed Sedgewhisker and Owltalon. The young toms proudly created nests near their father. But as Sedgewhisker aged, his ambition grew - a trait he had unknowingly inherited from his mother. He dreamed of authority, of influence. While his brother was quiet intelligence, and brute strength, Sedgewhisker had a calculating mind. He was analytical, wise, sharp, more outspoken than his brother. He attempted to prove himself, to earn distinction. As time went on, Sedgewhisker began to have difficulty with his vision. The outer parts became blurrier, than the insides. Soon everything was a blur. He had to squint, or get up close. He was loathe to inform anyone, but of course the truth got out. His chance at deputyship and power was now far out of grasp. he was urged to take an early retirement, but he adamantly refused. he still refuses to this day - and continues his warrior duties as best as he can.[/classy] |
