The silence around her was soothing as she listened to the water flow and the breeze brush past the trees. Her eyes were closed for the moment so that she could appreciate the world around her. Something that her sister could very well not do. At least she didn't think so. Perhaps if she were able to sit still for more then two seconds she would be able to. But it didn't matter to her what her sister did. Right now she didn't want to think about the bright she-cat. She let her mind wander through the trees, to places she had been and places she had seen. It was all so familiar to her. Everything was familiar. Always the same.
After a moment of just sensing her surroundings Palestep opened her warm brown eyes and lowered them to the river in front of her. The water was beautiful and she knew that it was the source of RiverClan's entire life. The river. It was their water, their source of food, a place to cool off in extreme heat. It took care of them.
With this thought she lowered her body above the river so that she could peer into it without scaring any of the fish away. She kept her shadow far from the surface and watched for a moment as the light above her shimmered against the water and in turn the fish within it. Moments passed as she waited. While she was definitely admiring them, she also knew that the clan needed feeding. She spotted at least five small fish within the water, but those weren't what she was after.
There was a sixth fish sliding freely through the river rush. This particular fish looked big enough to feed a Queen and three of her kits. Or at least two warriors.
She watched tentatively as the fish swam closer to her. Even when it was near enough for her to grab she still didn't go for it. She waited patiently. Until the time was right.
SPLASH!!! Within seconds Palestep's paws were in the river slapping her fish onto the shore and killed it with a quick bite. When she was finished she looked to the sky and asked StarClan for blessing then looked down at the fish in triumph. What a beautiful catch she had made. Thank StarClan she had been taught to hunt so well.
Suddenly she heard a stick crack and she snapped her head in the direction of the intruder. Her warm brown eyes wide in alarm. She kept her mouth shut, but her claws shaped out of their sheath and her fur stood on end.
"Who is there?" She asked, her voice firm, but soft.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag2/recklessisawreck/lavi02_zps6d82ffe9.png][scrolly:h(170),w(450),sy] It was mid-afternoon when the observer decided to return to the area he had been residing as he watched the group of cats he'd come to know as Riverclan. He'd returned every day for the past while (or longer- to be quite honest, the feline could be quite air-headed at times and he had in fact lost track of the days), preferring to observe in one area for a while before moving on. He'd probably move on to another clan in the next moon or so- and maybe then make the rounds yet again. It would be a while until he moved on from this specific gathering of clan cats.
One paw in front of the other, the fluffy somali made his way to his usual observation spot, movements quiet and reserved- just how he had been taught by his mentor, Panda. Ears twisting left, right, before focusing ahead of him, perked and pressed forward with the intent to listen for any danger ahead. He held his tail low, level with the heel of his back legs, keeping the long fur from brushing the ground, but keeping it low enough to avoid it looking like a "here-I-am!" alert.
Despite Lavi's struggle to keep silent, to keep unnoticed, it all went to waste as his back leg caught a twig that his front paws had expertly avoided. Cursing mentally to himself as he realized a clan cat- Riverclan of course- had noticed there was another cat out there and had called out to see who he was, he ducked out of pure instinct. His golden eyes scanned the area in front of him, through the bramble and brush, ears listening and whiskers twitching in curiosity.
The pale fur and amber-colored eyes drew his attention immediately, recognizing the female feline immediately. He may not know her name, but he knew her face, fur, and that voice indefinitely. She'd watched him before- he had known that she was there but most often made it seem as though he hadn't really seen her. But he had- Lavi was an expert at seeing and there was no way he wouldn't have seen the feline at the riverbank.
So, maybe today he might as well speak to her. Ask her why she was watching him instead of the other way around- the way it was supposed to be. He was the observer, not this she-cat- not that he was angry about it- a far cry from it, he was more curious than anything. He understood that she had a right to be curious- after all, he was a stranger walking around the border every day.
Stepping out of the brush across from the river- on the opposite side that the female cat was standing on, Lavi kept his head ducked down to avoid catching his face on any branches or thorns as he emerged. He straightened up, but not too quickly, wanting to do his best to avoid seeming threatening.
"Ah, hey, it's me," he greeted, sounding friendly enough. "Y'know, the cat you've been watching." There was humor in his eyes at his own words, reclining on his haunches, with his fluffy tail wrapping around his paws calm- not seeming concerned with the other's presence.

There was a moment where everything was still. A moment where her heart was racing and her instinct told her to run. But she did not. She only watched as the crimson fur stepped out of the foliage and met her gaze with strange golden eyes. At first she could not find her voice and she stood gazing at him with wide eyes.
This was the cat that she had seen so many times before while on patrol or while she was out hunting here near the border. She had never expected to talk to him for he never seemed to want to talk to her or anyone else. He was merely here to watch. She didn't know why and it seemed like an interesting task, but just standing at the border seemed kinda boring. You wouldn't see much action from there. She couldn't understand why he came over every day. Was he trying to find out more about them so that he could tell a group of cats so they could attack? Why else would he be here.
Finally she found her voice and she stood up and turned fully toward him. He was on the other side of the river so if he was by himself she should be safe from him.
"I could say the same about you stranger. Why are you here. The others may not know about your presence, but they do not pay attention the way that I do. I can see you watching us like a hawk. My question is Why? What have you found about us that interests you so much? You are here every day and yet either you have told friends about us and they are patiently waiting to strike or you have no friends to tell. But neither of those explanations make any sense to me."
She paused and looked down at the fish she had caught. It was a bit strange that the tom was talking to her now. She couldn't understand why he was here. And speaking to her just made each idea make even less sense.
"I watch you because you watch me. I am in defense mode. Here to protect my clan. So why do you watch the border?"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag2/recklessisawreck/lavi02_zps6d82ffe9.png][scrolly:h(170),w(450),sy] Lavi didn't seem very put-off by the she-cat watching him with those wide eyes of hers. After all, that has been what she'd been doing for days on end- just watching him while he watched her and the clan she called home- so really, if anything, he was used to it by now. He just observed her body language, watching and waiting for her to respond to his words.
By the way she was acting- he could only assume she as trying to figure out his motives- which was nothing new to him in his experience with the clan cats thus far. It would not be the only time thus far that he had been accused of having ill-will towards some cats just because he was observing. A gentle look remained on his face- what looked like a smile resting casually among his features. The expression held nothing like that of a feline that was aiming to harm others.
The red feline could not help but tilt his head in slight amusement as the clan cat spoke. He waited until she finished, before immediately speaking up with his own response.
"I'm here simply to observe," he meowed openly, finding no shame in the fact. "But you're right- I have no friends to tell." His voice sounded honest, but not at all remorseful of the fact that he didn't have friends. The fact of the matter was, Lavi could possibly have friends- but as the observer he was, he was not supposed to refer to them as such. They were supposed to be mere acquaintances- factors in his observations, cats to be used as a level to learn more of the are around him. It wasn't to the somali's liking, and he felt like he was struggling with it- though he would never admit it.
"I am simply mentally recording facts for the next generation of observers. To keep history of both the clans and outsiders... and everything beyond that alive. I have nothing against any of the clans- I have no side." The words sounded perfectly practiced- though not dishonest. "I have no intention to use the knowledge I gain against any cat."
It only took a moment before his demeanor changed from perfectly-practiced and mature to near-kit-like, his voice laced with excitement and his eyes bright and curious.
"So what's your name? I'm Lavi."
Any thought of new information sent a thrill through the long-furred observer. That is one of the main reasons he became one- he loved learning new facts about anything and everything.
