Hotter than most days at least. And this was ShadowClan, known for chilled hearts from the darkness and pines that surrounded them. However on this particular day, it was entirely too hot. Briarleaf was actually panting a little, something she rarely did if ever. Which meant everyone else in camp was probably the same way. With any luck her clanmates wouldn't be frog-brained enough to dehydrate. Sending a silent prayer to StarClan, Briarleaf heaved herself to her paws in search of Thistlepaw.
Blinking in the little light filtering into the camp Briarleaf grumbled. When she was too warm she got grouchy. Add to that her apprentice, who's long black fur was horrible in this kind of weather. Well. Let's just say she knew that today would be an interesting day. And as much as all Briarleaf wanted was too just lie down in the shade, they needed to get some herbs they were low on.
Poking her head into the apprentice den where Thistlepaw normally was, she let out a soft meow. "C'mon lazy bones. I know it's hot but we need to get things done. And no complaining. I'm not happy about it either." Backing out of the den she sat down, contemplating what was needed. There was only three things she knew of, but she wanted to make sure Thistlepaw had been paying attention and so she waited patiently for him to arrive.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu167/Rippedshadow/Templates/thismid.png] It was an unseasonably warm day for Green Leaf. Very unseasonably warm. The sun radiated heat above them and it was felt by nearly every cat in the clan. It was days like this that Thistlepaw was grateful for the tall pines that encircled the camp. Their thick foliage made the sunlight difficult to penetrate to the ground. But even without the sunlight bearing down on their backs, most cats still felt the heat. Many frequented the watering hole and most cats remained in their dens, in the dark and cool shade. Thistlepaw remained quiet, his paws tucked neatly underneath him, as he watched the goings-on in camp. The warriors that were selected to go on patrol and hunting did so without complaint – though their frustration with the heat didn’t go unnoticed by the medicine cat apprentice. Other apprentices were sent off to wet moss for the elders – whom had trouble venturing out in this sort of weather. Thistlepaw flicked an ear in annoyance when one apprentice said that the elders needed to just move their den close to the water, for as many trips as he had made for them. Complaining fur-ball. It was better than the elders dehydrating. Then that would be his and Briarleaf’s responsibility. And, quite frankly, he didn’t feel like dealing with mouse-brains who wouldn’t drink in this heat.
As if his thoughts had summoned her, Briarleaf came strutting his way, panting from the heat. Oh, great, he thought. This was never good. He had hoped that their chores could have waited until the height of the day had passed, so that it was cooler. When she called to him, Thistlepaw heaved a sigh before getting to his feet and loping out of the apprentice den. The moment he stepped out, he could feel the heat bouncing off his long, black pelt. He hated hot days. For him, it was nearly impossible to keep cool. He’d have rather wished Leaf Bare back and deal with the snow in his fur than the heat!
“We’re going out? Now?” Despite the fact that he’d grown irritated with the other apprentices complaining, this was a different matter. Water was a necessity on a day like this. Going out to collect herbs wasn’t. He gave his shoulder a quick lick, his annoyance clearly visible. “Can’t it wait until later in the day?”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu167/Rippedshadow/Templates/midbriar.png] Briarleaf rolled her eyes and cuffed one of Thistlepaws ears with her paw. "That my dear apprentice, was complaining." she chided. Heaving a sigh she stood on her paws and looked about the camp again before turning back to Thistlepaw. "I would much rather wait for the heat to subside as well, but we can't. One of the elders is having a lot of joint aches, and we're out of tansy. We need to try and gather some before the heat causes them to shrivel up." Looking at Thistlepaw she chuckled. "Besides, theres some near one of the streams so we'll have a chance to drink."
Looking up at the pines surrounding the camp Briarleaf shook herself. Though the pines sheltered them from most of the sunlight, it was still hot. Briefly Briarleaf thought of Thymecloud and her apprentice, hoping they were coping well enough. StarClan know's WindClan would be getting the worst of the heat with no shade. Shaking her head she headed out of camp.
"Alright. Enough dawdling. The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can get back." Ducking under the entrance it seemed like the heat was even worse out here. Half of Briarleaf wanted nothing more than to turn back and forget the tansy all together, however that wasn't fair to the elders. Grumbling she set off towards the stream, the pine needles under her paw pads at least a little cool to the touch.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu167/Rippedshadow/Templates/thismid.png] The moment Thistlepaw stepped out of the shelter of the den, he felt the oppressive heat full force, despite the fact that the pine trees sheltered most of the camp. He couldn’t imagine how hot it was out in the forest, where the sun managed to hit the trails from time to time. He wanted nothing more than to crawl back into the apprentice den, but Brairleaf was having none of it. Not even his terse remarks about leaving at the height of the day. She cuffed his ear and he flicked it in annoyance. Though, to be completely honest, the gesture had become something of an endearment. He and his mentor had clashed initially, as they both were obstinate and opinionated, but they had learned to work fairly efficiently with one another, even if Thistlepaw dugs his paws in at some of her attempts to teach him. He still wasn’t completely convinced he was cut out to be a medicine cat, but at least he had moved past the stage of denial. And Briarleaf continued to work with him, even though he tried her patience. And she tried his.
“I wasn’t complaining,” he replied, terse. “I was simply pointing out that no sane cat would venture out in the forest at the height of the day for flowers…” Of course, when he heard her reason for going – that one of the elders was complaining of joint aches – he felt a little badly. Weather could bring on such episodes of aches in the elders, whether it was very hot or damp. He gave an exaggerated sigh. “Fine, lead the way slave master…” But he was glad that the elder would soon feel some relief. And for the opportunity to drink in between the chore. He would’ve had to venture out eventually for just that reason, anyway.
Thistlepaw followed behind Briafleaf as the exited the camp. The trail was dappled with sunlight and there was absolutely no breeze to stir the leaves of the trees of the pine needles below them. He noted, a bit wryly, that the hunters would have a difficult time sneaking up on prey if the forest remained so quiet. The young apprentice fell into step beside his mentor, ignoring both his limp and the sunlight on his dark fun. “Do we need anything else while we’re out?” he asked, then. He glanced her way. “Because I’m definitely not making two trips.” He glanced up toward the cloudless sky. They had had little rainfall. “If we don’t get any rain soon, we might be in trouble come the height of Green Leaf. The herbs won’t be flourishing like the normally do…” They wouldn’t be just worrying about the supply of herbs in their medicine shriveling up and dying. That threat would extend to the new growth as well.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/uu167/Rippedshadow/Templates/midbriar.png] Briarleaf half-expected a cuff back, or a tail grab as she exited. However, Thistlepaw made no such movements. It was a little unorthodox, their relationship, but one she had grown accustomed to and attached to as well. She realized that Thistlepaw had matured more than when he had first become her apprentice. It was only natural, she figured. Thistlepaw had wanted to be a warrior, but with his injury he was unable. Briarleaf still remembered taking care of him, and chiding him for his foolishness. There was nothing the young she-cat hated more than cats coming to her with injuries that could have been avoided. To her, it was a waste of her time and resources. But even she had to give him a little break. Kits were kits after all. It was still a shame for the tyke then. But now...well...he was doing very well.
Flowers? What does he think we're doing, trying to pretty-up the camp? she thought, irritation pricking lightly at her paws. However, Briarleaf kept her maw closed. There was no use in starting an argument for something so trivial. And even if it wasn't trivial, is was too hot to fight. She prayed the heat didn't cause some of her clanmates to go frog-brained and do anything stupid, but as one would guess, there is always a few spoiled goods in every batch. Briarleaf just hoped she and Thistlepaw wouldn't have to deal with them. “Fine, lead the way slave master…” Briarleaf couldn't help but laugh at that. Looking back at him she grinned. "Oh, I haven't even started with you kitty." she purred, eyes glowing.
Eyes focused on her surroundings Briarleaf thought back to the herbs in the den. We have enough borage left for Ashcloud, we collected yarrow and thyme he other day...maybe some juniper berries... Blinking back into reality Briarleaf grumbled lightly to herself. "We could use a bit more juniper berries, just in case the kits decide to try crow food again, although I would hope they learned their lesson the first time." Flexing her claws she shouldered her way under a tree root, continuing her pace. "We can collect them on the way back. Can you think of anything else?" she murmured, looking at Thistlepaw with a slight tilt of her head.
