It was the idea of apprenticeship that caught Cedarstorm off guard, even though he wouldn’t admit it. For moons, he had watched his brother, Pinestep, the more admired between the two, receive an apprentice, train him to become another warrior of ShadowClan, while Cedarstorm received nobody to train. For a while, the tom acted patient, but after apprentice after apprentice was appointed to different warriors, Cedarstorm simply accepted the fact that he wasn’t going to train apprentices – at least while Froststar was still leader. Cedarstorm always blamed his leader for lacking an apprentice. She probably wanted to prevent him, the quiet and ambitious tom, from becoming a deputy.
But here he was, walking toward the burnt sycamore training space, ignoring Mallowpaw, his first apprentice, whose short legs scrabbled behind him. Even though the large tom was well aware that he was moving much faster than his apprentice, he could only move forward at the same pace. No slowing down, no looking back. He had a goal and much in mind to do, but as he walked, he could hear the heavy breathing of Mallowpaw’s panting behind him and the rustle of the foliage they brushed.
Cedarstorm stopped when he saw a tree blackened by a lightning bolt from a storm moons ago. This was the burnt sycamore. It had the distinct smell of ash, the smell of destruction and rekindling. Cedarstorm turned around and saw Mallowpaw still jogging towards him. Cedarstorm scoffed as if he was going to mockingly laugh at his apprentice. “Full points for speed,” the tom sarcastically remarked, “You’re slowing me down.” Cedarstorm waited for Mallowpaw to reach him.
“You should know that I don’t have time to babysit a kitten, so step up the pace. With me, it’ll just be fight after hunt after fight.”
notes: Sorry for posting a very belated post, but here it is. I'm not sure if you're okay with me making Mallow slower than Cedar, if you want I'll revise things!
