> Light was fascinating. It could not be held, could not be scented, and could not be heard. Yet it could be seen, and quite obviously played a major part in the world. Plants grew better in places with greater amounts of light and wilted in its absence. Fish delighted in its presence, and cats sunned themselves in it. Palepaw could not observe it directly, nor could she create an objective experiment as her father preferred to do.
All that was left to her was to observe its effects on the world and the markers of its presence, as she would study the ripples certain fish left behind when they flitted close to the surface. Refraction was one of the easiest markers of the presence of light to identify, and one of the most vividly present. It showed the composition of light better than most other things, and Palepaw had come to a fascinating conclusion.
Rather than the brilliant, slightly yellow-tinged being she thought it was, light was composed of a range of colors which, when not separated by a refracting body, appeared to be of a single color. The waves of the river either reflected white light back at the tiny apprentice, or refracted it into a streak of colors she recognized easily: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, a middle point between blue and purple, and purple. She had no idea what to call the mid-point color between blue and purple, and thought of it as "blueberry" for lack of a better name.
Palepaw reached out and dabbed at the edge of the river, her unwavering and motionless form shifting fluidly into action. She watched the play of light off of the ripples, observing the colors and the flash of white. The fish she'd caught earlier lay neglected beside her, no longer holding her attention now that the fishing exercise she'd been assigned had been completed. Her mentor expected her to labor all day over catching the fish before she returned to camp with her prize, and Palepaw saw no reason to forfeit research time.
If asked, she'd reply truthfully with what she had been doing, and would accept the chastisement and punishment that went with it. For her theories and observations, the sacrifice was worthwhile. Father had been the same way, spending half his time aiding the elders and compiling a history of RiverClan's power dynamics, and half of his time tending to a growing patch of catmint he'd managed to grow near a part of the river.
She remembered his disconsolate expression when he returned to the nursery one day and told her of the ill fate of that particular experiment. The medicine cat had also been most displeased, having reaped the benefits of Cloudfang's experiment. Palepaw herself preferred to theorize and experiment with forms of energy and forces she could not touch, finding the elusive answers much more satisfying than her father's earthy experiments.

LICHENPAW Ugh, what a boring day. He had been assigned to clean up the elder’s den that morning, and as thrilling as that had been, he couldn’t have finished fast enough for his liking. So with a sloppy job well done, he had put on a sweet face to report his good deed before promptly turning tail and scurrying out of camp to find something a little more exciting to hold his interest. But what in the world was there to do? Hunting? Maybe, but all the little prey creatures were still hiding from the cold, making the hunt for them a little more frustrating than fun. Hm, so that was definitely out of the question. He was almost tempted to look for his sister, but StarClan only knew where she was. She had become quite the popular cat, even with that shyness, and Lichenpaw didn’t see much of her anymore. Not that he was upset or anything, oh no, he could do perfectly well on his own. He didn’t have to rely on his little sister for company!
Huffing a bit with frustration at his own thoughts, Lichenpaw directed his paws towards the river, deciding to see if anything interesting could be found there. Maybe he’d exert just a little effort to catch a fish or two, just to avoid a scolding for going out and doing nothing productive. Oh well. The young tom couldn’t help but smile as the gleaming water of his Clan’s namesake came into view, though his gaze quickly fell on another shape perched by the water and the smile shrank. Damn. The small tom almost considered turning right back around to find something to do elsewhere, maybe go explore the Gorge or something innocent like that, though with another thought, he decided against it. Why not see what this new little apprentice was like? With his luck, maybe she would get annoyed and leave so he could enjoy some peace and quiet. He eyed the other cat for a moment, Palepaw or whatever. Kind of a strange one from what he’d seen. Ugh, just his luck. And what the heck was she doing? Just staring at the water?
With a sigh, Lichenpaw put his paws in motion again until he was standing beside the other apprentice. He eyed the pile of fish she had collected before focusing bright eyes on the actual cat. "What, you just gonna sit out here and stare at the water all day?” he then meowed loudly, pausing a moment to settle down on his haunches beside her. Better make sure she was aware that she was going to be blessed with his company for a while. “Surely there’s something a little more interesting you could be doing?” His eyes briefly flicked over to the water, almost as if trying to see what was so fascinating about it, though his attention was quickly lost and he rolled his eyes before focusing back on Palepaw. Oh StarClan, unless this was her idea of fun. She really was a strange one if that was the case.

> Palepaw labored to pull herself from her thoughts at the amorphous sound of another cat talking. She extricated herself from her own mind just in time to catch the tail end of the words, spoken in a tone deep enough to indicate a male, but too high to indicate a full-grown cat. Her head automatically tilted to one side as she thought, a habit developed to placate the other queens who scolded her for speaking too harshly to their kits so that she could continue to think as she pleased.
Being the newest apprentice, only two and one-third days into her training, Palepaw was not yet familiar with the timbre and tone of her fellows' voices as she was with the queens' and kits' voices. She had developed the ability to recognize and properly respond to each individual as they wanted her to while she continued to do what they wanted. And she couldn't recognize this tom. A frown twitched onto Palepaw's face, and she reluctantly turned her head to face him.
She frowned at him. Not Wolfpaw, who was rather massive and a longhaired tabby. This tom was a brown tabby as well, but a large portion of his body was white. Her dark green eyes roved over his face and body, committing the appearance and sound of his voice to memory. Now all she needed was a name to go with it, and she would have him neatly cataloged along with others of the Clan.
"Father thinks that I would enjoy his botanical experiments more than my own hypotheses." Remembering Cloudfang's advice to maintain eye contact during social intercourse, Palepaw met the tom's eyes steadily. "However, my study on refraction has yielded valid theories." She gestured to the river as she spoke, striking it to cause the light to refract in a dizzying rainbow of colors. Droplets spattered on her paws, darkening circles of grey fur from the color of a burgeoning storm to the color of wet stone.
Most of the other kits had not shown interest in her hypotheses, had thought her strange for her developed vocabulary and the implementation thereof. It had turned them off of interacting with her the few times she deigned to, and Palepaw had put it down to their young age. Father had invalidated that hypothesis by telling her of his experiences with his fellow warriors, who were similarly turned off by Cloudfang's articulate manner of speaking.

[/div] YOU THINK THAT YOU CAN TAKE ME ON? - - - - YOU MUST BE CRAZY Lichenpaw eyed the young she-cat with a judgmental eye as he waited for her response to his little ‘greeting’. There were a variety of ways she could respond, and considering that she hadn’t been an apprentice for long, Lichenpaw didn’t have any previous interactions to refer to. Maybe she would snap at him, or try to start up a friendly conversation with silly little small talk. He had heard talk that she was strange, though…maybe she would just ignore him or even walk away! Oh StarClan, that would be lovely. Then he could have this whole part of the river all to himself and do…something. He’d figure that bit out later. Maybe he’d even celebrate his solitude with some extra work to catch some fish! Or not, that sounded terribly boring. Something else then.
But while Lichenpaw entertained himself for a moment with thoughts of what he would do when Palepaw walked away, it seemed she didn’t want to stand up and leave him after all, instead spouting out some words that took Lichenpaw several moments to even decipher. Well. That certainly wasn’t what he had expected to hear. He wasn’t quite sure what to think about this Palepaw now. She wasn’t anything like he’d met before. But was that good or bad? Lichenpaw sat in silence for a moment, considering her words as he tried to figure out this she-cat. “What sort of hypotheses?” he found himself inquiring softly, eyes following the other cat’s paw as she splashed at the water to emphasize the subject of her…studies. The refraction of light on the river. What sort of past time was that? No other apprentice that he’d ever met cared one bit about information and learning. Hell, he’d never even met an older warrior or elder who possessed this sort of need for knowledge. Though Palepaw had mentioned her father…surely that was where she had inherited this intelligence, though by her words, it seemed as if their interests differed. Huh. Despite how different this other apprentice was from other cats Lichenpaw had met, he couldn’t bring himself to dislike her. No…she was intriguing, and while Lichenpaw certainly didn’t quite understand much of what she’d said, it was a refreshing change from the other apprentices. Maybe getting to know this she-cat wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all. He would just have to see where this went.
“…it’s Palepaw, right?” he then meowed, figuring he may as well extend some sort of paw of friendliness or…whatever. tagged .
