fawnpaw
The gorge was her place to escape. Her mind was usually so bundled and confused, and this place seemed to wipe that all away. Oh, how she loved that. Fawnpaw closed her eyes as her paws led her in whatever direction they so pleased, making sure she was a safe distance away from the edge of ensured death, if she fell. The apprentice could actually feel the wonderful slack in her muscles, as they were so tight otherwise. She cleared her head out and focused on her senses. Fawnpaw enjoyed doing so as it took up all of her focus and energy. Squeezing her eyes shut tight, she took a calming breath.
The swift sounds of the water moving hit her ears first. It was a rushing noise, sort of like when the wind brushed tall grasses against each other. It echoed off the tall sides of the gorge. The grass underfoot was pretty pitiful, probably because of the harsh winter it had just been through. It would grow back in no time, she thought. Her claws dug into it while she walked along. Nearer to the edge, the earth turned into rocks. She opened her golden gaze lazily and stopped her trotting. Perhaps one look over the wall wouldn't hurt, right?
Fawnpaw blinked and sucked in a breath of courage before carefully stalking up to the gorge. Her neck fur was on end, and she exhaled, attempting to regain composure. If anyone saw her like that, surely they would think she was scared of the edge. Maybe she was, but she didn't have to admit that aloud. Ears perked in anticipation, she reached the end of the wall and dug her claws firmly into the earth. Fawnpaw peeked her head over the edge to see the gushing, hurried waters below. It wasn't like most rivers or streams in her territory. It was much darker, much more angry. Which also meant it was deeper. Perhaps her fear of deep waters was silly for a cat who could swim, but she couldn't help it. So many 'what if's flew through her mind and she had to shut her eyes and take a step back.
She forgot, however, that she had wrenched herself into the ground and when she pulled back her claws had stuck in the dirt, sending her forward again. One of her front paws unhooked and went over the edge and she squeaked aloud. Using her back legs she pushed herself away from the gorge, stumbling onto her back. Fawnpaw was dazed, her heartbeat pulsing a loud, frantic rhythm in her ears. Her body was frozen, and she probably couldn't have moved if she wanted to. Never again! her inner voice shouted at her. She had to agree. Fawnpaw managed to regain some calm by focusing on the sky above, her breaths slowly becoming less staggered.

[/div] YOU THINK THAT YOU CAN TAKE ME ON? - - - - YOU MUST BE CRAZY The Gorge seemed to have a strange pull to it. It was obviously dangerous, that much was certain. A drop like that couldn’t possibly be even a bit safe. But for some reason, it had an attraction to it, pulling cats (especially the younger and more foolish ones) towards it. Sure, there were rules, some silly stuff the older cats had made up about it being ‘forbidden’ and all, but truthfully, Lichenpaw found that those foreboding warnings made the Gorge even more exciting to visit. It made one feel brave and important to stand near it, not that Lichenpaw didn’t feel that way already, of course. Still, it was fun, and the apprentice ofen found himself wandering towards the deep cut in the earth when he wanted to avoid boring tasks such as training. Blech. And since today was one of those days, his paws soon lead him towards the infamous Gorge, the sound of rushing water causing him to smile with relief. Finally.
But Lichenpaw found himself stopped before he could reach it, eyes falling on another figure near the Gorge. He almost turned back around right then, not wanting to deal with some cat ordering him to leave, how it was dangerous, blah blah blah. He’d just find somewhere else to hang out. His eyes soon recognized that the other cat was a fellow apprentice. Fawnpaw? Yes, that was the one. He frowned slightly as he watched her, wondering if it was worth going out to meet her. Though as he considered this, the she-cat was suddenly a rush of movement, and Lichenpaw’s breath hitched in his throat. What if she fell? He took a few step forwards in worry, ready to try and help the she-cat up in case she flipped over the edge, but she seemed to pull herself out of the dangerous situation, flopping back onto her back as she yanked her paws loose. Oh well. Couldn’t say that he hadn’t tried. He was quite relieved that he hadn’t had to rush out to try and heave an older cat over the edge of the Gorge. If she had even managed to hang on, that is. Ugh, best that she had avoided that situation all together, yes.
After shaking such unappealing thoughts from his mind, Lichenpaw didn’t hesitate to approach her this time, deciding to meet this she-cat who had dared get so close to the edge. Surely there was something interesting her if she had done that? Unless she was just mouse-brained. That was completely possible as well. Hm, fifty-fifty chance he supposed. He could always find another spot in the territory to hang out if it did turn out that she was just a fool. Lichenpaw took a few more steps to position himself at the she-cat’s head, his own face leaning forward to peer over hers with an amused smirk. “That was quite the tumble you almost took there!” She was obviously still shocked about it, if her panting breaths had to say anything about it. tagged .

A tingle had shot madly through her veins for a quick second before she had regained her footing. It was a very new feeling. Fawnpaw wasn't sure if she liked it or not, but her brain wasn't working correctly. She still felt dazed and dizzy, and so when a certain apprentice decided to pop over her and make a comment, she about jumped out of her skin. In her flurry of surprised movement, she knocked her head on the underside of Lichenpaw's chin.
"Ow," she cried, before scooting up into a sitting position. Fawnpaw's head throbbed for a few moments and when it died down, she turned back to him. "I'm sorry," she murmured quietly. She wished she'd never came to the Gorge in the first place. First she almost took a tumble into the dark depths of the water, then she hurts one of her clanmates. Her ears flicked back to her head.
"I wasn't going to fall," she defended herself, even though she really had no say in whether she was or not. She just felt better when she said that aloud. Fawnpaw kneaded her paws into the ground, adrenaline not yet gone from her veins. She blinked back at Lichenpaw, her amber eyes studying his form. Words were failing her, embarrassment choking her.
Glancing around, she stood up and padded further away from the looming edge of the Gorge. She didn't feel like being so close to it right now. "Um, I'm sorry if I scared you, I didn't mean to.." her fur prickled with nervousness, "get so close. I just wanted to look," she explained, her eyes trained on anything but his face. She really didn't like having conversations of any sort, and she tended to ramble. Fawnpaw locked her eyes on one particularly fluffy cloud that looked sort of like a squirrel, if she tilted her head a bit.

[/div] YOU THINK THAT YOU CAN TAKE ME ON? - - - - YOU MUST BE CRAZY The amused smirk was wiped right off of Lichenpaw’s face as her head knocked his chin, his comment obviously startling her in the worked up condition she was in. His teeth clacked uncomfortably, though luckily his tongue wasn’t in the way of the sharp fangs. His good mood definitely would have been ruined then, and Fawnpaw might have just preferred actually going over the Gorge. Thankfully it seemed he would just end up with a sore chin for the rest of the afternoon. He stumbled back from her, a short hiss escaping him as he wrinkled his nose unhappily, briefly raising a paw to brush across the underside of his mouth as if to make sure it was still there and intact. He eyed her as she recovered from her own new headache, briefly hoping that she wasn’t seriously hurt. Ugh, then he’s have to drag her all the way to the medicine cat’s den and get her fixed for a concussion or whatever. She seemed fine, though, and he let out a soft huff of relief. His chin wasn’t that hard, anyways, not like she should be that hurt anyways.
The tabby and white tom rolled his eyes at her apology, murmuring a soft ‘whatever, it’s fine’ in response. He supposed she couldn’t be completely one to blame, since he had been the one to lean over a startled cat in the first place. Hrm. Maybe he had deserved that. Either way, she should have been more careful! He paused at her defense of not planning to fall, and he couldn’t hold back the laughter that escaped his mouth. “Oh no, I could tell that you had complete control of the situation.” he meowed back, eyes bright and amused. She had been too close to ending up in the Gorge to be making statements like that, especially when one misstep could have sent her down. Despite that, though, he couldn’t help but like this she-cat. Sure, seemed to be a bit of a fool, especially now that she wasn’t even looking at him (what in the world was that about?), but she obviously had some sense of adventure if she had come to the Gorge on her own.
Hm. She was overly apologetic, too. Oh well, she’d just had a fright, so he supposed it was fine. Besides, she should be apologetic for actually making him worry about her for a moment and then clonking his head with that hard head of hers. “It’s fine.” he snorted, eyeing her for a moment before shrugging. He couldn’t help but be annoyed that she suddenly seemed to be unable to look at him. Maybe she was strange? Because he sure knew that there wasn’t anything wrong with him. “Well I guess you ended up with quite the look.” he then added with a smirk before his eyes followed her gaze to the sky. What on earth was more interesting than him? Clouds? He frowned up for a moment at the offending clouds that were seemingly more appealing than him before rolling his eyes and glancing away. He hadn’t looked at clouds since he was a kit, and he was an apprentice now, no time for that. “So what were you doing out here other than getting yourself almost killed? The Gorge is forbidden, after all.” Though the amused undertone of his voice proved that he didn’t give a damn about that silly rule. tagged .

[style=text-align:justify; margin-top:50px; width: 240px; height: 350px; overflow:auto; float:right; margin-right:5px;][style=margin-top:-15px; padding-left:5px; padding-right:5px] The hyper-alert apprentice swayed on her legs as Lichenpaw began speaking. He really did have some sort of soothing touch to his voice because she could actually feel herself begin to relax. One day she'd have to ask him how he did it. Fawnpaw even managed to tug her golden gaze off of the strange, puffy cloud that had mimicked a squirrel. Oddly enough, the thought of food made her stomach clench with hunger. Weird, how fast her body got over almost tumbling to its death.
Fawnpaw perked her ears, blinking her eyes into focus. Right, her clanmate was talking to her. She glared lightly at him after his sarcastic remark of having the situation under total control. Of course she did. She knew what she was doing, right? She shifted her small paws again, kneading them into the ground.
“Well I guess you ended up with quite the look.”
The RiverClan apprentice blinked at his comment. "Yes, I guess I did," she answered thoughtfully. Her eyes went back to his for a brief second before flitting away. "I've never really seen water like that before." Which was strange, really, because they were the Clan most affiliated with the substance. The Gorge had been so thick and deep. Like the kind in her nightmares. It was quite loud, too. Any cat could hear it's strong gush from a good distance from the Gorge, but that did not compare to the deafening roar of being just above it. A shiver ran down her spine.
Then Lichenpaw asked another question. Why had she been here? Yes, of course it was forbidden. Lots of fun, new things are forbidden. However, she was not blind. She knew when she was going to cross a line. Fawnpaw hadn't thought she crossed it until she almost went over. But she made it, right?
"Um," she started. "I just wanted to get away from camp. It was too crowded and I needed my own time." The words were hesitant. She wasn't really sure what it was that made her want to share her thoughts with this tom. It just felt like he actually might listen to her. "The Gorge is forbidden, yes. That's the point. I didn't expect anyone to be here." Not that she really minded his company. Fawnpaw needed to just be on her own a bit, but she wasn't about to push him away when she had just knocked his jaw with her head. She felt bad enough.
