It was late. Emberkit blinked the sleep from her eyes and opened her mouth wide in a perfect kitten yawn. She was curled up in her bed in the nursery. She looked up and glanced at the other kits, like Willowkit and Sootkit. They were snuggled in a group with their litter and their mother, their rhythmic breathing slow and calming. Emberkit slept far off, displaced from the rest of the group as an outsider. She sighed, wishing she could feel included. She had interacted with the other kits in remedial ways; at feeding and other routines, but they never really played the way she wanted to. Usually she was left alone, to play by herself with inanimate objects, such as leaves.
Emberkit rose from her sleeping place, stretching her little body out. Her black and orange fur stuck out all over the place, having been messed up by the moss and grass in her bed. She sat up and took her tongue to her fur, settling her unruly coat somewhat. Ember had learned in her three moons of life that her fur would never be perfect, but that didn’t stop her from trying. After grooming, she sat. She took in the calm of the nursery in its current state. She knew that in a few hours it would be bustling with feeding and kitten play, and that she would try to be included once more. Sighing for a second time, she left her bed and removed herself from the den.
She knew that going out into the camp this late could get her into trouble. She had learned that from experience, but sleep hadn’t been coming easy to her lately, and she sure as heck wasn’t going to just sit in the nursery. She walked out, observing the bright moon in the sky and the stars in its companionship. She sat close to the nursery just in case she got yelled at, but in all honesty she didn’t really care. None of these cats were her mother and father; they couldn’t tell her what to do. Emberkit just sat there, taking in her surroundings and wondering what her parents were doing at that very moment.
