She often misinterprets expressions and common body language that most cats pick up on without a second thought. Instincts can get one through basic communications, but when it comes to a casual chat Betelgeuse is often at a loss for what is appropriate to say and do. As a result she often comes off as a bit rude, simply because she doesn’t understand the rules of how socializing works. Attempts at interactions with other felines generally leave her flustered and embarrassed. She is far more comfortable around dogs and horses, which she grew up surrounded by. Still, despite her problems with communication, Betelgeuse is eager to broaden her horizons and see more of the world. She knows that there is more to life than hunting rats around her farm and often daydreams of the adventurous existence she could be having if she left home. Having been raised in isolation, Betelgeuse has a bit of a fanciful view of the outside world. She is completely unaware of the daily hardships that clan cats face, and is pretty naïve when it comes to how things work outside of her home. She imagines that one day she will leap from the top of a fence post and into the wide, great beyond. Unfortunately for Betelgeuse’s imagination, according to reality this is very unlikely to actually happen. Despite her big dreams and strange ideas, she is very settled into her current way of life. She knows her place in the world and is used to the comfort and security of living under the care of her Housefolk. She fantasizes about a grand, more exciting life, but completely lacks the motivation to make it happen. She is young and strong, and thus exists in a state of incredible potential, but her own inaction and lack of confidence in her own abilities has ensured that she is going nowhere fast. Finding herself untalented and incapable of accomplishing all that she wants to, Betelgeuse prefers never trying at all, over giving it a go and failing miserably. She is a bit irresponsible in this sense, and is not a good cat to trust with any genuinely important tasks. This does not mean Betelgeuse likes to spend her time moping about her lack of accomplishments. She has a fairly positive outlook on life, and it is difficult to catch her in a foul mood. Though she might be a bit boring, and kind of lonely, Betelgeuse does not think there is any excuse for giving up and rolling over into depression. She is also pretty eager to share this outlook on the world with others, though unfortunately actually talking with the canines she shares her home with has proved a fruitless effort. Betelgeuse thinks that she would be a good listener should she ever be given the chance, though, and looks forward to the day when she makes some friends that speak her language.[/classy] [classy=infotop]history[/classy][classy=infobottom] Betelgeuse was born to a local barn cat with a large number of siblings. Once she was old enough to survive without her mother, she was given away to a family of twolegs that owned a horse farm near to the clan territories. She was named by the oldest daughter, who had an interest in astronomy. The family intended for young Betelgeuse to take care of the various rodents that tended to infest their barn, and as she grew older she performed this duty admirably. Though she had no one to teach her to hunt, she took to it very quickly and was piling up rats and voles in no time. In return, the family took exceptionally good care of her, though she would always be kept as an outdoor cat. This left Betelgeuse with no companions but the other animals housed on the farm, this primarily being dogs and horses. Though she developed a sort of mutual understanding with these creatures, communication when it came to language was impossible. Betelgeuse was unaware of the clan cats that inhabited the territories around the farm until she witnessed a patrol of warriors skirt near to its fields. To Betelgeuse, they appeared a scruffy and fierce pack of cats, and she was both delighted and horrified by her discovery of them. It was a fine thing to actually see felines like herself, but ones that looked so dreadfully dangerous and unfriendly did little to encourage Betelgeuse to leave the farm. She became convinced a terrible fate awaited her should she ever venture away from home, and has tried to banish all thoughts of travel and excitement since.[/classy] |
[atrb=style, width:450px; padding:2px;][cs=2][classy=infotop]roleplay sample[/classy][classy=rpsample][This is a reply from another site where I roleplayed Betelgeuse, just for some context :)] Fear snapped at Betelgeuse’s feet, driving her to run even after all of her energy had been spent. Flecks of red dappled the fur on top of her paws, having dripped down from the ragged cut on her neck during her mad dash. Normally, the she-cat was a fairly pretty sight, but now she looked a disheveled mess. Limbs flailing and mouth parted to take in heaving gasps of air, calling her cute would be a stretch. The source of her terror was the first living cat she had seen since she was young. Initially, this was a very exciting event. Having a fellow feline to converse with had been Betelgeuse’s fondest wish for years, and she greeted the stranger with a warm welcome. She was repaid with a demand that she permanently give up the prey-rich farm as her territory. When the ivory kittypet attempted to explain that it wasn’t her territory, but actually belonged to her Housefolk, and that she couldn’t really even leave if she wanted to and that it’d be awfully nice if he just stepped off on the whole matter, the intruder interrupted her with some claws to the face. With her Twolegs, and their dogs, gone for the day, Betelgeuse had no choice to do what the loner cat asked: get the hell outta Dodge! Unfortunately, he seemed to want to ensure that she never came back, and so Betelgeuse found herself running for her life, each desperate leap carrying her further and further from the Horseplace and into the arid wasteland that the SkyClan cats called home. She had run out of vigor ages ago, but survival instincts could do wonders for one’s stamina in a pinch. It wasn’t that she had been too weak to fight. She just didn’t really know how, and so when her pursuer, a chocolate tabby tom, had instigated one, Betelgeuse fled. That was where her plan had ended, though. "Who’s that white cat? What clan is she from?" Betelgeuse dug her claws into the dirt and came to a quick stop the moment Peachspots and Jadestream came into view. Who were these cats? Friends of the loner? The towering white she-cat stood paralyzed, her blood-splattered head twisting to look from the SkyClan cats to the loner and back again. Stopping was allowing her follower to quickly gain ground on her, but Betelgeuse was tired and frightened and had never even been chased by a cat before. All she could manage was to stay standing while the loner bared down on her, golden eyes wide with panic. [/classy] |
