His birth was a peculiar one, not as related to him as a kitten - but rather his parentage. Shrikefang was known for being unusually small, with a tiny narrow build. His father, Nightfeather, on the other hand was exactly the opposite - uniquely massive. Their pairing was not only slightly comical, but cause for worry for the Medicine Cat who feared a difficult pregnancy and even worse birthing. Shrikefang was pronounced pregnant with three kittens, genders unknown. As her time grew nearer, tensions built. Nightfeather all but lived in the Nursery with his mate. As predicted, the birthing was very difficult. Shrikefang quickly gave birth to two sons - Slatekit and his twin brother Shalefall. But her third birth took many agonizing hours. Her shrieks and cries of pain permeated the camp and all but drove Nightfeather psychotic with fear. But finally, the third kitten was born - Smokekit. It was clear what precisely had been the problem - Smokekit was abnormally massive in size. The three kittens grew quickly, though Shale and Slate were always smaller than their massive younger brother. Shale and Slate quickly became inseparable. While their coloring developed, there was speculation that they might even be identical. This ended up not being the case, but the brothers were as close as any twins. As soon as they could walk, they were scampering about the Nursery - generally being a nuisance. They began to exclude Smokekit from their games- claiming he had an "unfair advantage". Yet it was Smokekit who often had to care for and clean up after his older brothers when Shrikefang fell into an exhausted nap. Slate and Shale were separated for the very first time- given separate mentors. Slate’s mentor was a kind and patient she-cat who tolerated Slate’s need for his twin. However, she was still stern and never allowed him and his brother to train too often together. However, Shalefall found that without Slatepaw's distraction, he was able to perform much better than normally. He began to look forward to his time with his mentor, though he sometimes missed his brother's constant companionship. This only made Slate sick with worry and the deep seed of abandonment began to form. They had shared everything since birth. But Shalepaw had gotten tired of sharing everything. The brothers neared their twelfth moon, anticipation thick in their stomachs. Soon, they would receive their warrior names. They couldn't have been more than a few days from the ceremony when Slatepaw came to Shalepaw, proposing a prank he said would be "legendary". Shalepaw was uncertain, as he wanted to spend his last days as an apprentice with his now-beloved mentor. But eventually he caved to Slatepaw. The two pulled the prank, and were inevitably caught. As punishment, their ceremony was put off for an entire moon. Shalepaw was very angry, but eventually got over it. Slatepaw eventually became Slatefur at last. Since his warrior ceremony, there has been no improvement in his maturity. Shalefall has thrown himself in whole-heartedly to his role as prankster. He is almost constantly with Slatefur - their nests side by side. Regrettably, he drifted away from the mentor he had once held dear. While Slatefur doesn’t much care, he’s just glad he has his brother back to himself. However, that did not last very long. Shalefall fell in love with Bluesmoke, another tom. He had never realized his homosexuality and it scared him. While Slatefur tried to comfort Shale, he was basically tossed aside. Slowly, Slate and Shale’s relationship began to deteriorate until there was nothing left. Shale now avoids him at all costs and this has twisted Slate’s personality, creating the monster he is today.
